In 1906, a Long Beach developer named Arthur Parsons dredged three islands from marshland and carved a network of residential canals inspired by the Venetian lagoon.
Naples Island, Treasure Island, and The Islands emerged as a neighborhood of arched bridges and waterfront estates mirroring the layout of Italy's floating city. The canals remained a backwater curiosity until the 1980s, when an entrepreneur launched authentic gondola operations using imported Venetian hulls and striped-shirted gondoliers trained in the traditional forward-facing rowing stance. Today the fleet maintains a dozen hand-built boats, each crafted in Venice's Dorsoduro district and shipped to California.
The waterways themselves span just over three miles, threading beneath eight pedestrian bridges and past homes built in Mediterranean Revival and Cape Cod styles.
